Alternative Provision

A smaller, nurturing learning environment for children who need something different.

Our Alternative Provision supports primary-aged learners who may be struggling to access or engage with mainstream education and would benefit from a calm, highly personalised approach.

Placements are typically commissioned by schools and local authorities, with close partnership working throughout.

A confidence-first approach to learning

Confidence isn't something that comes after learning. For many children, it's what makes learning possible.

When children feel emotionally safe and experience genuine success, they are more able to engage, take healthy risks and discover what they are capable of.

That's why we look beyond a child's age or year group.

We consider their individual starting points, strengths, interests, needs and readiness for learning — then build from there.

Sometimes that means rebuilding foundations.

Sometimes it means slowing things down.

Sometimes it means approaching something in a completely different way.

Progress starts from where the child is - not where we think they should be.

Learning is about more than English and maths

Academic learning matters, but so do the skills children need to participate confidently in learning, relationships and everyday life.

As an AQA Unit Award Scheme centre, House of Orkney Education can also recognise and celebrate achievements across a wide range of learning, skills and interests.

Working together

The best support happens when the adults around a child work together.

We build positive relationships with parents, schools and other professionals so that children experience joined-up, purposeful support.

For children accessing commissioned Alternative Provision, this includes individual planning, attendance and progress information, regular communication with the referring school and ongoing review.

For families accessing HOO privately, it means taking time to understand your child and creating support that feels achievable, meaningful and genuinely personalised.
