Many adults assume that learning to tell the time is simply a case of teaching children where the hands point on a clock.

But before children can read a clock confidently, they need to understand the pattern hidden within it.
A clock is not simply a collection of numbers.
It is a repeating pattern built around counting in fives.
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60.
For some children, this pattern can feel quite abstract when it is presented on a small clock face.
That’s why practical experiences are so valuable.
Children benefit from physically moving around large clock faces, jumping between numbers, counting in fives and noticing how each movement represents another five minutes.
This helps them understand that the minute hand isn’t randomly moving around the clock. It follows a predictable pattern.
Research and classroom experience suggest that children often find it easier when concepts are broken down into smaller steps. Rather than learning everything at once, they can first understand the hour hand, then the minute hand, before combining the two together.
When children understand the pattern behind a clock, they are far less likely to rely on memorisation alone.
3. A Clock Is a Fraction
This is the foundation that is often overlooked.
Telling the time isn’t just about counting.
It’s also about fractions.
Consider some of the language we use:
- Half past
- Quarter past
- Quarter to
These are all fractional concepts.
To understand them fully, children need to know that:
- A half is one of two equal parts
- A quarter is one of four equal parts
A clock is simply a circle that can be divided into equal sections.
If children can physically explore halves and quarters first, telling the time becomes much more meaningful.
For example, imagine a circle divided into two equal parts.
Halfway around the circle represents 30 minutes.
Now divide that same circle into four equal parts.
One quarter around the circle represents quarter past.
Two quarters represents half past.
Three quarters represents quarter to.
Suddenly, the language begins to make sense.
Children aren’t memorising phrases. They’re understanding the mathematics behind them.
Why Do Some Children Find Telling the Time So Difficult?
One reason telling the time can be challenging is because it places a high demand on working memory.
Children may need to think about:
- The hour hand
- The minute hand
- Counting in fives
- The position of the hands
- Fraction language
- Whether the time is “past” or “to”
That’s a lot of information to process all at once.
Sometimes when a child appears to have “forgotten” how to tell the time, they haven’t forgotten at all.
Their brain is simply trying to juggle multiple concepts simultaneously.
This is why slowing down and securing the foundations first can make such a difference.
Practical Ways to Support Your Child at Home
Before spending lots of time on formal clock work, try building the foundations through everyday activities.
Talk about time naturally
Use words such as:
- Before
- After
- Next
- Earlier
- Later
Explore routines
Discuss what happens first, next and last during the day.
Count in fives
Practise forwards and backwards.
Skip counting helps children recognise the pattern around a clock.
Explore fractions practically
Cut sandwiches into halves and quarters.
Share pizzas.
Fold paper circles.
Use hula hoops.
Measure time
Ask questions such as:
- How long does it take to brush your teeth?
- How many star jumps can you do in one minute?
- Can you tidy your room in five minutes?
These activities help children connect time to real-life experiences.

Children don’t learn to tell the time by memorising a clock face.
